Obituary for Helen Davis Gess

Yellow Spring, WV – One of the advantages of living a long life, 96 years, is that you have time to write your own obituary. (Other advantages are no longer bothering with the salt and sugar limitations, and indulging my daily routine of putting on lipstick and teasing my hair.)

I was born on May 11, 1921. I grew up in Capon Bridge, WV and graduated from Capon Bridge High School in 1939. In my professional life, I was a payroll clerk at Shenandoah Apple Co-op for 35 years. I know of no accolades I received, but I always tried to give the simple gift of a smile, hoping to encourage others.

Many thanks to the kind-hearted doctors and nurses who throughout my recent illnesses helped me with life-extending medical treatment, despite my age.

My sweet lovable family, how precious you all have been to me. Knowing and loving each of you has been the success story of my life. I am preceded in death by my parents; Harry and Granis McKee. My mother died when I was but one month old and I was raised by my grandparents; Tom and Ida Funkhouser. I am also preceded in death by my husband Cornwell W. Davis. We met one afternoon in Capon Bridge as I strolled the streets with a friend; the love affair lasted 40 years. I was then fortunate enough to find love again after Corney’s passing while attending my High School Alumni Banquet. I was married to W. Goode Gess, and we shared laughter, love and adventure for 18 years. Goode also preceded me in death. Lastly, I am preceded in death by my granddaughter, Amanda.

My beloved children, all of whom still bring great joy and fulfillment to my life; Donna (Doug) McEldowney of Blacksburg, VA, Jerri (Gary) Northcraft of High View, WV, Cornwell W (Sonny) (Linda) Davis, Jr of Yellow Spring WV, Greg (Cathy) Davis of Wardensville, WV, Kent (Teresa) Davis of Middletown, VA and Susan (Bill) Rashid of Bettendorf, IA. And, my step-children; William (Donna) Gess of Papillion, NE, Susan Greenwalt of Winchester, VA and Jim (Pam) Gess of Bunker Hill, WV. I love you all so much and I am so proud of you; I wish you good things.

I am also blessed to have 20 grandchildren/step-grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren/step-great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren. May you always remember; that I love you, and to every day, count your blessings. To my many, much-loved, siblings, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, thank you for enriching my life.

I was given the gift of life, and it has been a very happy life filled with family celebrations, thousands of card games, fishing, marching band music and, of course, my polka shows.

I attended Open Bible Baptist Church, Shenandoah Valley Baptist Church and Bunker Hill United Methodist Church.

A gathering of family and friends will be held at Giffin Funeral Home and Crematory in Capon Bridge, WV from 5:00 to 8:00 PM on Friday, September 15, 2017, and a memorial service will be held at 3:00 PM on Saturday, September 16, 2017. Officiating will be Pastor James Miller. Interment will be private.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Capon Springs Volunteer Fire & Rescue, PO Box 366, Capon Springs, WV 26823, or to the Bunker Hill United Methodist Church, PO Box 327, Bunker Hill, WV 25413.
