Biography

Ray Elmer Gray, 93, of Capon Bridge, WV, formerly of Arthurdale and Summersville, WV died on Tuesday, September 18, 2012 at the Hampshire Center in Romney, WV.

Mr. Gray was born on September 13, 1919 in Poe, WV, a son of the late Grover Gilbert and Nancy Acord Gray. He retired as a federal mine inspector for the Department of Interior, Bureau of Mines. Served in the U.S. Army as a technician fifth grade, was a World War II veteran, having fought in the European Theater. He was a 32nd degree Master Mason and a member of the Christian Church.

Mr. Gray married Shirley A. Pugh Gray on May 2, 1988 in Cumberland, MD.

Surviving with his wife of 24 years is a son: Danny L. Gray of Ronceverte, WV; two daughters: Rae Jean Slesinger of Lakewood, OH; Jo Anna “Jodi” Fouch of Petersburg, WV; two step-sons: Garland Staub, Jr. of Winchester, VA; David Staub of Harris, MS; four step-daughters: Pamela Bursey of Star Tannery, VA; Patricia DeHaven of Winchester, VA; Zana Staub of Petersburg, WV; Lesley Kesner of Yellow Spring, WV; one sister: Blanche Johnson of Hughestown, WV; six grandchildren, 18 step-grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and 14 step-great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by two sisters: Louise Pauley and Mable Hughes.

Funeral service will be held at the Giffin Funeral Home in Capon Bridge, WV on Thursday, September 20, 2012 at 7:30. Officiating will be Rev. Michael Funkhouser.

Family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 6-7:30 PM.

A graveside service will be held at the Brown Cemetery in Poe, WV on Saturday 22, 2012 at 2:00 PM.
