Obituary for Ila S. Slonaker

Ila Stickley Slonaker, passed away on July 13, 2018 at age 94 under the care of Hampshire Center and Hospice of the Panhandle.

Ila was born in Keyser, WV on December 25, 1923 the daughter of the late Frank and Blanche Saville Stickley. She is preceded in death by her husband William B. “Bill” Slonaker and brother William Frank “Buddy” Stickley and dear sister Dorothy Welshones. Ila and Bill were married November 4, 1942 in Winchester, VA and made their home on the family farm on Dillions Run Road in Capon Bridge. Surviving, a son, Steven William Slonaker and wife, Judy, a daughter, Shirley Slonaker Davy and husband, Rickie. Three grandchildren, Stephanie Slonaker Chisholm and husband Chris, Amy Elizabeth Davy and special friend, Perry Glass, Jamy C. Davy and Wife Clara. Eight great grandchildren, Sarah and Hannah Clem, Josie and Oliva Chisholm, Wyatt, Gavin, Londyn and Zion Davy. Several nieces and nephews and a dear friend and care givers

Ila graduated from Keyser High School and in later years continued classes in deaf education. She retired from the West Virginia School for the Deaf as a teacher’s aide, art instructor and substitute teacher with 16 years of service. She was a long time member of the democratic committee and was once nominated for democrat of the year. More recently chosen as one of Hampshire County’s shinning stars and was honored at the Hampshire County Court House by Governor Manchin. She enjoyed the Pleasant Dale Homemakers Club (CEOS) where she was a member and responsible for many county fair exhibits. She enjoyed drawing and being creative with oil paints and charcoals. She supported the Capon Bridge Library where she substituted as librarian and a life time member of the Friends Group. She enjoyed her cats, Sunshine and Smokey who were her constant companions and more recently her special kitty, Addie.

In late years Ila loved being on the go and was always ready at a moment’s notice. She could be found having lunch almost every Tuesday and Thursday at her favorite restaurant, Gregs. Mom, Grandmaw, Mimi and friend will be missed.

Funeral service will be held at the Giffin Funeral Home & Crematory on Wednesday, July 18, 2018 at 11 AM. Officiating will be Pastors Alanna McGuinn and Jerry Washington. A light lunch will follow at the Capon Bridge Fire Hall prepared by the United Methodist Women. Ila will be laid to rest beside her husband Bill at Malick Cemetery.

Family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday July 17th from 6-8 PM.
